“Look How Smart I Am!”

“With time, women gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no room left, it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren’t heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated, and happy.

Beginning today when I look at my backside in the mirror I will think, Good grief! Look how smart I am!”

Black on the Runway

I love clothes. And I especially love wearing black clothes. I also love autumn fashion and was so happy to see so many black peices on the runway. Here are some of my favourite picks:

Alberta Ferretti

Burberry Prorsum

Bottega Veneta

Chanel

Nina Ricci

Do you love wearing black too?

Isabel Marant?

For SOME of us, clothes might be hard to find. Rephrase. Clothes are easy to find, but clothes that suit our individual styles and personalities and lifestyle, NOT so easy to find! The older I get, the more covered I want to be. I also want to be comfortable, especially with a one year old.

Have you ever watched the outfits walk down the runway and think, No Way? Too tight, too sheer, too revealing, too low, too high, too crazy, not to mention too pricey. BUT now there’s hope: I found the perfect designer! Isabel Marant. (Thanks to my style.com app for iPhone!) How did I miss her collections before?

A LOT of her outfits are cool, duplicative, and covers the parts I want covered!  Here are two of my favourite looks:

Isabel Marant A/W 2010

Isabel Marant A/W 2009

Have you found a great store or website lately?

Desigual?

Good morning! As I lay sleepily in bed next to my still snoring baby, I got on my iPhone to see what was in the world. Have you heard of Desigual?

I first stumbled upon this really cool store when I was in Barcelona with my mom years ago. I bought a top (sorry I can’t show you, it’s packed away in storage) for a fairly good price. Soon after Desigual opened a massive store on Regent St in London, right up the road from Oxford St where I worked. Yay!  Desigual is said to be a Spanish street style kind of fashion. I love their coats, their collage way of displaying their clothes, and well, pretty much the entire 2010 collection! Their kidswear is supercool too!

One day at work, (years ago) a customer came in with THE COOLEST top ever. So of course I ask her where can I get one? Desigual! I hurried over a few days later, but sadly that top was not in my size. But I did find something else, this very cool halter. Is there a store that gets you excited? One that you center a shopping trip around? Would love to hear about it!

Happy Housewife

The Housewife.

When I was working in my last job I remember telling my colleagues that the next “job” I wanted was to be a housewife. I would not have to worry about wearing makeup, a uniform, or being nice to rude people. Life would be grand.

It came true. I quit that job after being married almost a year and I became a housewife, and a mom. Does this picture FEEL familiar?

I would like to think that I don’t ask for much (as I hear my husband laughing) and that simple things make me happy. Like if people around me avoid my pet peeves 😉 hehehe

Honestly, in any occupation there are certain things that make us really happy. A good client, a bonus, air conditioning that works in summer, pens that work, etc. As a housewife there are things that make me happy at home too. Simple things. When there are no crumbs in the butter. Or butter in the microwave. When ALL appliances work. Or my baby has his nap and all is quiet. When my dinners and desserts come out perfect and my husband raves he married the best woman in the world (I’m blushing).

I love sewing and all things haberdashery, I don’t mind cleaning or laundry when I feel like it,  I love being home and watching my baby grow and witnessing all his ‘firsts’, I love aprons and cooking, I love baking and having dinner parties, I love family home evenings and family cuddles, I love that my husband is not bossy and I get lots of praise for my efforts, I love wearing what I want everyday and doing what I want and love everyday so this has to be the best career I’ve had so far. x

Glamour Mom

Before

I swept my dark hair up into a sleek updo held by ebony pins and made shiny with gloss. Was feeling pretty good until later that day my baby kept grabbing the hair underneath and pulling it out in front of everyone. Note to self: bring spare pins.

Flowy silk lace wrapped around my body in a lovely dress with ruffles round the neckline. Looks great with my 3 inch heels but please ignore that huge baby drool stain on my shoulder.

Black smouldering eyeshadow with glittery gold gives a glamourous smokey look to any woman’s eyes. Hopefully it will distract from the bloodshot and teary eyes of a sleep deprived, super emotional new mom.

Dark denim and bright stitching of flared designer jeans worn to compliment the curves of a womanly shape. That fashionable rip near the ankle marks the unforgettable event of a tempramental baby with new teeth.

Custom ordered marquise diamond placed in a unique design on white gold band given to me by my fiance. It represents love and promises of love no matter what. Now worn on hands that constantly works with nappies, baby milk, butt cream, and everything in between.

Fresh and flirty perfume once lured in a man and made him dream of late nights and romance. The same perfume has new assignment: cover and distract smells from leaked breastmilk, baby sweat, and poopy nappies.

After

I titled this post “Glamour Mom” but most of the time I honestly feel like a frump! Am I the only one who thinks, ‘why do I bother?’ I just hope that all these mommy quirks can somehow be charming and looked on with humour. 🙂

Embrace Womanhood

Womanhood is only as beautiful as one is willing to see.  The gentleness, the courage, the nurturing, the determined. Vulnerable in the arms of a lover. Unconquerable as she holds a child’s hand.

Too honest to pretend, in her eyes emotions are seen but often misunderstood.

In her eyes, find her life, her dreams and all she fears. Watch her eyes as she watches the world around her. Her eyes will speak a language of their own. Listen, and you will unveil her soul.

Her lips feel alive through conversation, laughter, and the pleasure of spices. They witness her salty tears and criticise her deepest insecurities. Sincerity, or none, can be felt in a lovers kiss. Look at her lips and feel the kindness she gives as she shares her advice, her warnings, and her encouragement.

Her shoulders hold her head up while others try to push her down. She carries the uncomforted and shares their grief. Her lover caresses her shoulder, smooth skin contrasting to his ruggedness. The curves are familiar, and everywhere is a memory. The scar, the freckle, the pale skin. It is beautiful because it is hers.

A woman can find peace and inspiration from a field of flowers to the curves of one flower’s petal.

She is a diamond refined through and by generations of other women. She completes the circle of life. Bears the pain and carries the child, in her womb and then her arms. Her body will change, her mind will be wisened, her spirit strengthened.

Look in the eyes of a woman and see the beauty she carries in her heart.

Cold Hearted October

Feelings of warmth, when held by another,

Shivering from cold when not together.

An ignited fire has lost its flame,

Forgotten promises, a faint memory of a name.

Shattered dreams caused by icy words,

My ‘I love yous’ were never heard.

No tears cried or emotions shown,

Until his return, my love remains unknown.

But.

If you could hear my voice, I’d say I love you.

Look into my eyes and see I speak truth.

If you were next to me, I’d stroke your face,

Run away with you anywhere, any place.

If my arms could reach I’d take your hand,

My knees feel weak but I can still stand.

If I could have one wish it would be,

To have you this moment beside me.

If I had a choice, I’d be there,

Away from all this, it’s just not fair.

If I could have things my way,

I’d convince you to come back and promise to stay.

This Hair

(pretend this photo is from a vintage magazine)

Each morning when you style your hair do you just see hair or more? Certain hairstyles flash memories through my mind. A feathered cut reminds me of my first day of school at a new high school as a sophomore.  A sleeked updo reminds me of senior year prom where my date was very late! Long hair reminds me of when I first arrived in Sweden. Highlights remind me of my holiday in Greece. Layers reminds me of when my husband and I got engaged in Toronto.

I remember once telling a guy to play with my hair and he literally PLAYED with my hair and making it a mess with lots of knots! I also remember rolling my eyes at his immaturity!

I remember having a nanny job where a five year old loved to style hair. He brushed it and tried to make it look nice for my boyfriend who was coming over later that evening. When my boyfriend showed up he looked at me and started laughing. I was trying to get him to pay me compliments so the little boy would feel happy! He was such a sweet kid!

I remember in middle school always cutting my own fringe (or bangs) and my little sister watching me. One day she tried to do it on herself. She was about five years old and her bangs looked more like a spiky bush!

One of my favorite things about being with my husband is how he scratches my head. My hair gets real messy but its so relaxing and feels so good!

I’d say the best thing about getting a haircut at the salon is the scalp massage when they wash your hair.

At the moment my hair is always being grabbed and pulled out! by my 8-month old and I swear if he doesn’t stop soon I will have a bald spot!

Hair. Memories of girly sleepovers, hair disasters, romantic moments, spa visits, summer highlights and being drenched in rain.
